“Today marks the formal establishment of the Munster Technological University (MTU), and the beginning of a new dawn for the region. This is only our second technological university in the country, and is a major step forward in ensuring each region in the country has access to a university …” (more)
[Simon Harris,
The MTU will become the state’s second technological university tomorrow, on January 1st.
The Munster Technological University, which was first mooted in 2009, is the amalgamation of the Institute of Technology Tralee and Cork Institute of Technology.
January 1st, 2021: the appointed day for the establishment of Munster Technological University.
It is due to operate on six major sites across Cork and Kerry and have a combined student population of approximately 17,000 students.
The merger was first proposed in 2009 and the first significant milestone was completed in 2013 with a joint submission to the Higher Education Authority.
In June 2014, it was planned to merge in August 2016, however, a number of issues such as delays in finalising legislation and international panel recommendations slowed progress.

Cork, and
Galway, under an Act “to enable her Majesty” – Queen Victoria – “to endow Colleges for the Advancement of Learning in Ireland”.

Working from home brought great joy to Donagh as he got to spend lots of time with his 14-month-old son James, and with restrictions lifted during the summer they also had some great family staycationing breaks. In my home town of Cashel, work continues apace on the renovation of the Cashel Palace Hotel.
“The Munster Technological University (MTU) will be inaugurated on January 1st 2021, exactly two years on from the establishment of TU Dublin. Currently, three other consortia of Institutes of Technology are preparing their submissions for TU designation. A structure is now in place and a momentum has built up with the potential to transform Irish higher education …” (more)
