The change was announced Wednesday by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr.
Manhattan joins other cities, like Baltimore and Philadelphia, that no longer prosecute sex workers.
Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. on Wednesday announced that the New York City borough would no longer prosecute sex workers on charges of prostitution and of unauthorized practice of a profession in the context of unlicensed massage. Over the last decade we ve learned from those with lived experience, and from our own experience on the ground: criminally prosecuting prostitution does not make us safer, and too often, achieves the opposite result by further marginalizing vulnerable New Yorkers, Vance said in a statement Wednesday.
The Wednesday announcement from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office covers thousands of cases dating back to the 1970s, as well as about 900 open cases related to prostitution or unlicensed massage.

MANHATTAN (CN) In a major step toward the decriminalization of sex work, the Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance told a judge Wednesday that his office will stop prosecuting arrests for prostitution and unlicensed massage.
“For years, rather than seeking criminal convictions, my office has reformed its practice to offer services to individuals arrested for prostitution,” Vance said at a virtual court hearing this morning before Judge Charlotte Davidson. “Now, we will decline to prosecute these arrests outright, providing services and supports solely on a voluntary basis.”

More than a year after his sex-crimes conviction in New York, fallen movie mogul Harvey Weinstein s lawyers filed an appeal Monday, calling his trial unconstitutional for failing to guarantee him a fair and impartial jury trial.
The 166-page brief was filed by Weinstein s legal team, led by New York attorney Arthur Aidala, to the state Appellate Division challenging Weinstein s conviction of first-degree sexual assault and third-degree rape in February 2020 in Manhattan.
The brief argues that Weinstein s convictions should be reversed, the third degree rape charge dismissed as time-barred, and a new trial ordered on the single count of first degree criminal sexual act.
