The Boys and Girls Club of Greater La Crosse has received a statewide award for its work on mental health challenges with kids and their families, after leading the charge for several years. The BGCGL Behavioral Health Program, a partnered program with Mayo Clinic Health Systems that places full-time mental health staff in the clubs to work directly with students, was awarded the annual Wisconsin BGC State Program of the Year for 2020. “I’m really proud of the fact that our organization’s being recognized as a leader in behavioral health and support for kids, and I would say, too, we’re just getting started,” said Jake Erickson, the executive director of BGCGL.

Woman pulled from East Side Lake after falling through ice Thursday night

KAAL-TV Created: December 18, 2020 09:24 AM (ABC 6 News) - Emergency crews responded to East Side Lake Park in Austin Thursday night around 10:30 after a report that someone could hear screaming coming from the park area but was not able to see anyone. Austin Police Chief David McKichan said crews were able to determine the screams were coming from an open part of the lake. The APD said the officer was able to briefly locate the woman in the water but there was not a safe way to get to her. Additional crews were called in to help. APD officers at the scene used spotlights, thermal imaging cameras and binoculars to keep the woman visible. A firefighter with the Austin Fire Department geared up and started making their way to the woman. The APD said the firefighter was able to locate the woman, at the time of her rescue she had begun to submerge and was just visible enough to be found.

Due to dark and foggy conditions, visibility was limited. The victim was briefly located bobbing in the water by responding officers before the Austin Fire Department and Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service responded. Shortly after, the victim was unresponsive and was floating in the water.
