Austin-based Indie Meme Film Festival Launches April 16

The Austin-based, annual Indie Meme Film Festival (IMFF), now in its sixth year, will be a virtual film program this year; it runs April 16-18 and April 23-25 on film and festival screening platform Filmocracy. Founded by Alka Bhanot and Tripti Bhatnagar, IMFF screens “culturally diverse and socially relevant independent films” from South Asia, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, and Iran. Beginning on April 16, live post-screening programming allows attendees to experience meet-and-greets in the festival’s “Q&A Lobby Building” (virtually) on the Filmocracy website. The second weekend will see the U.S. premiere of Veyilmarangal (Trees Under The Sun) by filmmaker Bijukumar Damodaran, who will participate in a Q&A.

Indie Meme Film Festival, Austin s annual celebration of South Asian independent cinema, will return this month for an online edition. The 6th annual fest will be held over two weekends, April 16-18 and 23-25, via the Filmocracy.com platform. In addition to streaming films, viewers will find virtual Q&As with filmmakers. This is the second virtual year for the fest. Indie Meme was founded by Alka Bhanot and Tripti Bhatnagar, who envisioned a film fest featuring countries such as India, Pakistan, Nepal, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Iran and Sri Lanka. “When we started,” Bhanot told the American-Statesman in 2019, “a lot of people’s idea about South Asian cinema was Bollywood and nothing else.”
