It isn t clear how widely the variants are already circulating. So the latest moves by countries to bar international travellers may again be too little, too late. As nation after nation rushed this week to close their borders with Britain, the moves brought back memories of the way the world reacted after the coronavirus first emerged broadly in the spring. Most of those initial travel prohibitions came too late, put in place after the virus had already seeded itself in communities far and wide.

Nearly a year into the pandemic, the world is once again alarmed, confused and divided over the trajectory of the virus. Based on reports of a new variant of the coronavirus, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson over the weekend issued a lockdown order on most of England s southeast region and banned or limited Christmas gatherings outside individual households. Johnson cited a study from a United Kingdom group of scientists that projected that the variant could be as much as 70% more transmissible. When the science changes, we must change our response, Johnson said.

MUTANT Covid may already be tearing unnoticed through Europe because surveillance on the continent is so poor, experts warn.
British scientists have analysed more samples from Wales in the past week than France has done during the whole pandemic.
Experts have warned that the new strain could already have spread through Europe

Researchers study the genome of around one in ten lab-confirmed cases in the UK, compared with just 1 in 100 in Europe.
It means the UK is far better placed to spot potentially lethal changes to the bug and track its movements across the country.
The new variant was first spotted from a sample in Kent in September but experts say it remains possible it originated abroad.
