New Strain Of Coronavirus Infects Over 1,000 People In The United Kingdom

By Bill Galluccio Dec 15, 2020 Health officials in the United Kingdom said that they have identified at least 1,000 people who have become infected with a new strain of the coronavirus. While the virus has mutated before, the latest mutation occurred with the spike protein the virus uses to infect people. Scientists said that while the mutation could make the virus more infectious or potentially impact the efficacy of the newly developed vaccines, they have not found any evidence that is happening. They cautioned that they must do more research before reaching any definitive conclusions about that new strain. Efforts are underway to confirm whether or not any of these mutations are contributing to increased transmission. There is currently no evidence that this variant (or any other studied to date) has any impact on disease severity or that it will render vaccines less effective, although both questions require further studies performed at pace. We will provide further upd

New coronavirus strain spreading in UK has key mutation

By Kate Kelland The mutations include changes to the important “spike” protein that the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus uses to infect human cells, a group of scientists tracking the genetics of the virus said, but it is not yet clear whether these are making it more infectious. “Efforts are under way to confirm whether or not any of these mutations are contributing to increased transmission,” the scientists, from the COVID-19 Genomics UK (COG-UK) Consortium, said in a statement. The new variant, which UK scientists have named “VUI – 202012/01” includes a genetic mutation in the “spike” protein, which – in theory – could result in COVID-19 spreading more easily between people.

Norwich scientists research new Covid variant | Eastern Daily Press

All RNA viruses mutate. As a virus makes copies of itself, occasionally a random change happens that propagates, sometimes the change or mutation is significant but often it’s not. We can expect a virus to mutate. With SARS-CoV-2 these mutations happen at a rate of around one to two mutations per month and, as a result of this on-going process, many thousands of mutations have already arisen in the SARS-CoV-2 genome since the virus first emerged in 2019.

New coronavirus strain spreading in U K has key mutations, scientists say

LONDON British scientists are trying to establish whether the rapid spread in southern England of a new variant of the virus that causes COVID-19 is linked to key mutations they have detected in the strain, they said on Tuesday. The mutations include changes to the important spike protein that the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus uses to infect human cells, a group of scientists tracking the genetics of the virus said, but it is not yet clear whether these are making it more infectious. Efforts are under way to confirm whether or not any of these mutations are contributing to increased transmission, the scientists, from the COVID-19 Genomics UK (COG-UK) Consortium, said in a statement.
