Oregon reports 48 deaths, 1,562 new coronavirus cases as vaccination campaign begins OregonLive.com 12/17/2020 Kale Williams, oregonlive.com
The Oregon Health Authority on Wednesday reported 1,562 new confirmed or presumptive coronavirus cases and 48 more deaths, the second-highest daily fatality count since the pandemic began.
The record, 54 deaths, was set Tuesday.
Officials said the back-to-back records in reported fatalities were the result of daily case counts that have remained stubbornly high and also, to a much lesser degree, the inclusion Wednesday of past deaths that are now considered COVID-related.
Some fatalities must be categorized by death certificates that need to be reviewed and confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Wednesday’s tally included 11 deaths from May through October.
The OHA released the following information about the 54 people whose deaths were reported Tuesday:
Oregon’s 1,161st COVID-19 death is a 76-year-old woman in Hood River County who tested positive on Dec. 1 and died on Dec. 13 at her residence. She had underlying conditions.
Oregon’s 1,162nd COVID-19 death is a 71-year-old woman in Washington County who died on Nov. 24 at her residence. The death certificate listed COVID-19 disease or SARS-CoV-2 as a cause of death or a significant condition contributing to death. She had underlying conditions.
Oregon’s 1,163rd COVID-19 death is a 96-year-old woman in Washington County died on Dec. 7 at her residence. The death certificate listed COVID-19 disease or SARS-CoV-2 as a cause of death or a significant condition contributing to death. She had underlying conditions.

Since the pandemic began, there have been 1,214 deaths and 96,092 confirmed cases. Today’s record-high death toll tragically reminds us that the pandemic is far from over despite the arrival of vaccines in Oregon, said Patrick Allen, director of the Oregon Health Authority. These Oregonians and the ones who passed before them were loved ones who will be dearly missed by their families, for whom we express our sincerest condolences.”
