City of Grand Rapids earns Tree City USA, Growth Awards City of Grand Rapids and last updated 2021-04-22 09:35:22-04 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The City of Grand Rapids recently earned its 23 rd Tree City USA Award for its commitment to effective urban forest management, according to a news release Thursday. It also earned a Tree City USA Growth Award for displaying higher levels of tree care and community engagement during the calendar year. The recognition has four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

Indianola Named as Tree City USA

Indianola was recently awarded a Tree City USA Award at the Urban Forestry Awards Luncheon along with 72 other Iowa cities. The Urban Forest Awards recognizes cities, college campuses, and utilities that demonstrate a variety of dedication to the importance of trees in their respective communities. To qualify for the Tree City USA Award, a city must have either a city forester or active city tree board, have a tree ordinance, spend at least $2 per capita annual for its community forestry program, and have a tree planting and maintenance plan. The awards are presented on behalf of the Arbor Day Foundation and the Iowa DNR.

Washington Receives Tree City USA Awards

The City of Washington was recently awarded for their dedication to the importance of trees in its community. The annual Urban Forestry Awards which was held virtually earlier this month presented a Tree City USA Award and Tree City USA Growth Award to Washington on behalf of the Arbor Day Foundation and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. To qualify for a Tree City USA Award, a city must either have a city forester or an active tree board, have a tree ordinance, spend at least $2 per capita annually for its community forestry program, and have a tree planting and maintenance plan. To qualify for the growth award, cities must provide education and public relations, partnerships, planning and management, and tree planting and maintenance in their community. Washington has had the Tree City USA designation for over 30 years, and they plan to have their annual tree giveaway at 8 a.m. May 15th at the Washington County Fairgrounds.
