Samsung Electronics lost its leading position in the global 5G smartphone market to rank fourth in the first quarter of the year, a report showed Friday, as Apple and Chinese makers expanded their presence with new devices.
Samsung s share in the 5G smartphone market stood at 12.7 percent in the January-March period, down from 34.6 percent a year ago, according to market researcher Strategy Analytics.
The South Korean tech giant shipped 17 million 5G smartphones in the first three months of 2021, up 105 percent from a year earlier, but it was not enough to defend the top spot as its rivals outperformed the company in the fast-growing 5G handset market.

Samsung Electronics on Wednesday expected a market forecast-beating earnings for the first quarter as its mobile business fared well, offsetting a relatively tepid performance from the semiconductor business.
In its earnings guidance, the South Korean tech giant estimated its operating profit at 9.3 trillion won ($8.3 billion) for the first three months of the year, up 44.2 percent from a year ago.
Its first-quarter operating income estimate beats the market consensus of 8.95 trillion won in the data compiled by Yonhap Infomax, the financial arm of Yonhap News Agency that surveyed 12 local brokerage houses last month.

With global companies working to tackle climate change, Samsung Electronics is also taking part by utilizing eco-friendly technologies.
The tech giant posted a video on its YouTube channel, Thursday, showing how it is using solar panels at its four semiconductor-manufacturing plants in Yongin, Hwaseong, Pyeongtaek and Asan.
Installing the solar panels is part of Samsung s plan to fully use renewable energy in its operations. In June 2018, Samsung announced its worksites in the United States, China and Europe would rely exclusively on electricity sourced from renewable sources by 2020.
