SOUTHEASTERN NC Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity submitted a rezoning request to build an 11-home project in Castle Hayne, in a bid to bring a collection of affordable homes to a rural region of the county.
The current zoning permits an eight-lot development on 5 acres. Habitat wants to increase the density by three lots, said Lauren McKenzie, director of finance and operations for the nonprofit.
“That location, especially in Castle Hayne, is going to be a new community for us,” she said. “It really supports the affordable-housing model because it’s still close enough to where families can benefit from access to downtown Wilmington services, but they can also enjoy the benefits of rural living.”

NEW HANOVER COUNTY Following a week in which extreme weather disrupted the Covid-19 vaccine shipping process, New Hanover County received substantially more vaccines from the state than in recent weeks. The surplus includes 1,000 doses that should have arrived last week.
As many as 2,340 doses of the Pfizer vaccine will be used to schedule appointments this week in the county. Federal guidelines have shifted, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now advises that six, not five, doses can be pulled from a Pfizer vial.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY With the local vaccination effort soon to enter its third month, over half of New Hanover County’s 65-and-older community received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
Donna Fayko, health and human services director, said it equals about 55% of the 65-and-older community.
State data indicates a total of 32,000 people in New Hanover County have received at least one shot, which is approximately 13.6% of the total county population. Health care workers are also eligible for vaccinations, but compiling the total population of that community has proved difficult, Fayko said.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY â County Manager Chris Coudriet, in an âexecutive decision,â directed health officials to generate a plan that allows employees of the New Hanover County Detention Facility and 911 Communications to receive Covid-19 vaccinations immediately.
Over the last few months, the two wings of county government have faced exposure to the coronavirus, which forced substantial numbers of staff into quarantine.

âIâd like a plan that brings forward county personnel that work in those facilities into the vaccination schedule asap,â Coudriet wrote in a Wednesday email to county leaders. âThere may be others that need to be advanced too, but I canât accept anything less than our team in those sites beginning their journey to immunity now.â
