San Antonio voters got it right when they chose progressives in the City Council runoff Saturday.
Of the four new members, the two most progressive, both educators, also will be the youngest. In District 2, Jalen-McKee Rodriguez, 26, easily defeated his former boss, one-term incumbent Jada Andrews-Sullivan, to become the first openly gay man on City Council.
District 5, an open seat with Shirley Gonzales terming out, will be filled by Teri Castillo, 29, who decisively beat Rudy Lopez.
In District 3’s race between an ascendant South Side political dynasty and a fading one, Phyllis Viagran beat Tomas Uresti to become the first person to succeed a sibling on the council. She replaced her younger sister, Rebecca Viagran, who is also terming out.

In District 1, Mario Bravo defeated longtime Councilman Roberto Trevino in Saturday s city runoff election. The council district is in central San Antonio and incudes parts of downtown and extends all the way up to Loop 410 to the north. Many of the issues within the district deal with increasing property taxes, the homeless population and overcrowding in the district.
