Derek Chauvin trial: Minnesota AG Ellison says he felt a little bad for defendant

Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz weighs in on The Ingraham Angle Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who recently called for further police reforms following the conviction of Derek Chauvin, said in an interview that aired Sunday that he had a confluence of emotion after the verdict, which included a sense of satisfaction and even some sympathy for the defendant. He told Scott Pelley, a correspondent for 60 Minutes, that it was clear that Chauvin deserved to be convicted in George Floyd’s murder, but he’s a human being. I’m not in any way wavering from my responsibility, Ellison, who spent 16 years in his professional career as a criminal defense attorney, said. But I hope we never forget that people who are defendants in our criminal justice system, that they’re human beings. They’re people. I mean, George Floyd was a human being. And so I’m not going to ever forget that everybody in this process is a person.

Rep Waters: Chauvin Trial Judge Was Way Off Track With Appeal Comment

Rep. Waters: Chauvin Trial Judge Was ‘Way Off Track’ With Appeal Comment Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) said Saturday that the Minnesota judge overseeing the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was “way off track” in saying that remarks Waters made to demonstrators before the verdict was handed down could help the defense win an appeal. “I’ve talked with a lot of legal scholars and lawyers. He was way off track,” Waters said during an appearance on CNN “He knows that there was no interference with jurors,” she added later. “And he knows that this is not the cause of an appeal. Most of the time you have a case like this, they’re going to appeal it anyways. To say that I’m going to cause an appeal really is not credible.”
