HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - Healthcare workers in Alabama have treated thousands of COVID-19 patients since March 2020. Nurses working in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Huntsville Hospital say every experience has been a new challenge over the last year.
“Everything has been a new challenge over the past year,” said Jay Pratt, RN. “COVID definitely affects the lungs but it affects other organ systems, so it’s just been real challenging having to take care of these patients.”
Hospitalizations spiked in June/July 2020 and December 2020 into January 2021. Nurses in Huntsville Hospital’s MICU began treating COVID-19 patients last year, and the unit became a care unit for those battling the potentially deadly disease.

Even one year into the pandemic, testing positive for COVID-19 gives rise to a whirlwind of emotions and events. Fewer Indiana counties this week are facing the state s county-level COVID-19 restrictions governing social gatherings as the spread of the virus continues to slow, the state health department s latest map update shows.
Another 11 counties Wednesday were shaded blue on the state s advisory-level map. That means 42 of the state s 92 counties now no longer face the state s gathering capacity restrictions but must still obey social distancing and mask-wearing protocols.
Both Indiana s public health emergency order and county-level restriction order were extended last month and will remain in effect through March. The current county restrictions limit social gatherings to 25% of capacity in orange and red counties and 50% of capacity in yellow counties.
Monica Cozar was the nurse treating Sagrario.
“It makes you see reality, life, how it is. Black and white,” Cozar said when asked about her experience treating COVID-19 patients.
Dr. Claudia Alvarez told NBC 6 the daily battle inside the unit can wear down medical professionals.
“One of the hardest parts of doing this job is knowing you can do everything you could but you can’t fight against this virus,” Dr. Alvarez said. “You can’t stop something that’s taken over the world.”
She said scrutiny and conspiracy theories outside the hospital make it worse.
“There’s been times when many of us have wanted to quit,” Dr. Alvarez said. “But what keeps us going, and at least me, I know that there is still a need and there are still people out there that will survive because of the care that we provide them.”
