Single-Payer Reform and Rural Health in the United States: Lessons from Our Northern Neighbor
Abstract
Single-payer health reform has secured its place in the mainstream American health policy debate, yet its implications for particular subpopulations or sectors of care remain understudied. Amidst many unanswered questions from policymakers and political pundits, rural health has emerged as one such area. This article explores rural Canada’s five-decade-long experience with a national publicly funded health insurance program as a valuable opportunity for cross-national learning. During March 2020, I conducted 13 semi-structured, elite stakeholder interviews with government officials, academic researchers, rural hospital executives, public health association leaders, rural health administrators, and representatives from provincial medical, hospital, and physician associations in Ontario. I found that a single-payer model confers notable advantages over a market-based model, includ
The Asia-Pacific Region: A Hot Spot For Clinical Trials
By Mathini Ilancheran, principal analyst, R&D, Beroe Inc.
Introduction
The Asia-Pacific region has become the hot spot for conducting clinical trials due to the ease of regulatory compliance, the low cost of conducting studies, a growing patient population, and the presence of a few top clinical institutions acting as sites. For example, the regulatory agencies in China are working toward an enhanced clinical trial process by reducing the overall review and approval process.
1
The clinical trial workforce contributes to around 30 to 35% of the overall trial cost. This makes FTE rates for clinical research a key parameter to consider. These rates are generally higher in the developed markets as compared to the Asia-Pacific region, which is why the latter is becoming an important location for conducting clinical trial studies. Also, the cost per patient across all therapeutic areas and phases is much lower in Asian countries

MOHW chides celebrity over pregnancy post
By Wu Liang-yi and Jake Chung / Staff reporter, with staff writer
The Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) yesterday refuted claims by a transgender Internet celebrity, known as Wang Yao (罔腰), that she was pregnant, adding that Taiwan does not permit uterine transplantation.
Wang Yao should not mislead the public with disinformation, the ministry said.
Wang Yao on Thursday posted on Instagram photos of a sonogram result saying that she was pregnant and that it was an “abdominal pregnancy.”
Department of Medical Affairs Director-General Liu Yueh-ping (劉越萍) said that no hospital in Taiwan has been approved to conduct uterus transplants, adding that abdominal pregnancy can cause fatal hemorrhaging and doctors usually recommend to abort the embryo under such conditions.
