Royal Blackburn Hospital MILLIONS of pounds in damages were paid out last year following serious mistakes in care at East Lancashire’s hospitals, damning new figures have revealed. Data from NHS Resolution, which handles such cases on behalf of the NHS, reveals 94 clinical negligence claims against East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust were successful in 2019-20. A total damages bill of £14.1 million was paid out in relation to these claims over the year, while further legal costs totalled £1.1 million. Successful claims against the trust were up 52 per cent compared to the 62 reported in 2018-19, when £7.8 million was paid in damages. The Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts, administered by NHS Resolution, handles all negligence claims against members for incidents after April 1 1995. This means claims could be settled for harm which occurred years before.

Someone can bring a claim against an NHS trust if it is believed they, or a family member, suffered harm or died due to negligent treatment. Data from NHS Resolution, which handles such cases on behalf of the NHS, reveals 26 clinical negligence claims against Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust were successful in 2019-20 out of 33 reported. Of those reported, five were related to obstetrics – care provided during pregnancy and childbirth. A total damages bill of £13.9m was paid out in relation to these claims over the year, while further legal costs totalled £667,240.

Data from NHS Resolution, which handles such cases on behalf of the NHS, reveals 91 clinical negligence claims against East Suffolk And North Essex NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Colchester Hospital, were successful in 2019-20. A total damages bill of £11.8 million was paid out in relation to these claims over the year, while further legal costs totalled £1.2 million.
ALMOST three million pounds in damages was paid out following serious mistakes in care at the trust that runs Andover hospital, new figures reveal. There were 30 successful claims of clinical negligence against Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT), who also run Basingstoke and Winchester hospitals, in 2019-20. Legal costs related to these claims totalled £349,442, with the number of successful claims against HHFT up by 11 per cent in comparison to the year before. Someone can bring a claim against an NHS trust if it is believed they, or a family member, suffered harm or died due to negligent treatment. In addition to the above, data from NHS Resolution, which handles such cases on behalf of the NHS, reveals that a total of 40 clinical negligence claims were filed during 2019-20, as well as six further incidents that could result in a claim.
