Coronavirus: Mutant strain behind dramatic rise in Brighton and Hove

THE new variant of coronavirus is responsible for a dramatic rise in Brighton and Hove cases, the city’s Public Health chief has warned. The mutant strain of the virus, which is believed to have originated in the South East of England, is about 70 per cent more transmissible than its predecessor. There has been a 155 per cent increase in the Brighton and Hove’s infection rate over the past seven days, it has been revealed.  It is now equivalent to a weekly rate of 208  new cases per 100,000 residents  Health chief Alistair Hill issued the warning after it was announced Brighton and Hove, along with all other parts of Sussex not currently in the toughest restrictions, would be placed into Tier 4 measures from Boxing Day.

People shielding in Wales advised not to leave home for work or school

THERE have been changes made to the advice for those who were previously shielding. Back in March, people who are clinically extremely vulnerable were asked to take strict measures to protect themselves. This was relaxed when the first lockdown was lifted. Welsh Government has since updated that advice so people who were previously shielding should no longer attend work or school outside the home. This follows a significant rise in infection rates, possibly due to a new strain of coronavirus. In a written statement, the Minister for Health and Social Services said: The advice to those who are clinically extremely vulnerable, previously ‘shielding’ has changed from today to advise those within this group that they should no longer attend work or school outside the home.

Health minister calls on extremely vulnerable to stay home

Extremely vulnerable people should not attend work or school outside of the home, the Welsh Government has advised. The Welsh Health Minister, Vaughan Gething, issued a written statement calling for clinically extremely vulnerable who fell into the previous shielding category, to take extra precautions. He said: This is particularly the case for those whose work requires them to be in regular or sustained contact with other people, or where individuals share a poorly ventilated workspace for long periods. Letters from the Chief Medical Officer for Wales (CMO) will be issued confirming this advice but will take some time to reach individuals due to the festive period. These letters can be used as evidence for the purposes of claiming statutory sick pay.
