New COVID-19 cases shot past 7,000 in Georgia and stayed above 4,000 in South Carolina as positive test rates shot up there and across Augusta. Georgia added 7,072 new cases to reach 609,868 with 65 new deaths for 10,100, the Department of Public Health reported. Richmond County saw 133 new cases for 13,557, Columbia County had 71 more for 7,770 and McDuffie County added 16 for 1,065. All other counties saw single-digit increases: six in Burke for 1,229, eight in Jefferson for 1,211, four in Jenkins for 551, five in Screven for 572, eight in Wilkes for 482, two in Lincoln for 350, one in Warren for 226, one in Glascock for 98 and one in Taliaferro for 62. Richmond County suffered three new deaths for 224, Columbia County lost two patients for 89, Burke County suffered a loss for 17 and Lincoln County had a new death for 10, along with two deaths in Aiken, which raised the area s toll to 606.

COVID-19: Georgia adds 3,152 cases, South Carolina adds 1,626

Georgia added 3,152 COVID-19 cases for a total of 546,859 cases Monday. Georgia Department of Public Health also reported five deaths, 165 hospitalizations, and 11 admissions to intensive care units. This brings the state up to 9,719 deaths, 40,952 hospitalizations and 7,247 ICU admissions. The agency reported the following new cases for area counties: Richmond County added 65 cases for 12,267, Columbia County 40 for 6,997, McDuffie County five for 961, Screven County two for 518, Warren County two for 217, Jefferson County seven for 1,121, Jenkins County one for 513, Glascock County one for 85, and Taliaferro County three for 48. No new cases for Burke, Wilkes, and Lincoln counties. No new deaths were reported inthe Augusta area.

Dec 16: COVID-19 pandemic deaths spike in Georgia, South Carolina

COVID-19 deaths continued to climb in Georgia and South Carolina Wednesday while the Aiken-Augusta area suffered a half-dozen new deaths for the second day in a row, with Aiken County reaching a grim milestone. Augusta hospitals were also treating a record number of infected patients for the second day in a row. Georgia added 4,186 new cases to reach 488,338 with 52 new deaths for 9,302, the Department of Public Health reported. Richmond County saw 59 new cases for 11,144 and Columbia County had 30 more for 6,252. Other area counties saw five new cases or less: one in Burke for 1,074, three in Jefferson for 1,039, five in McDuffie for 885, one in Jenkins for 497, one in Screven for 489, one in Wilkes for 406, one in Lincoln for 302, one in Warren for 203 and two in Glascock for 73. Taliaferro County was unchanged at 42.
