BERLIN - Germanyâs environmentalist Greens announced Monday that they ve chosen co-leader Annalena Baerbock to make the party s first bid for the chancellery in the countryâs September election, while a power struggle in Chancellor Angela Merkelâs centre-right bloc entered its second week.
Baerbock s nomination was unveiled by the party s other co-leader, Robert Habeck, in a smoothly staged announcement that contrasted with the increasingly heated standoff in Merkel s Union bloc.

Germanyâs Green party has named its co-chair Annalena Baerbock as candidate for chancellor in autumnâs federal election, as the party rides high in the polls and Angela Merkelâs conservative bloc squabbles over its own choice to succeed her.
Baerbock, 40, viewed as a tenacious, down-to earth centrist with an eye for detail, and an expert on climate change and how to tackle it, told a small party gathering she aimed to âmake politics for society at largeâ.
She described her candidacy as âan offer, an invitation to lead our diverse, prosperous, strong country into a good futureâ.

Two conservative leaders locked in battle for Angela Merkel s crown failed to reach a deal by their self-imposed deadline, pushing the chancellor s CDU-CSU alliance deeper into crisis months before elections.
Armin Laschet, chief of Merkel s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, and Markus Soeder, leader of Bavaria sister party CSU, have been in a scrum for a week over who will lead the conservatives into elections in September.
The rivals had earlier said an agreement would be found by the end of the week but party sources said Sunday that a deal was still out of reach with closed-door negotiations between both men ongoing.
