Alert: Scammers calling residents, posing as sheriff’s officers
January 22, 2021
Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler has issued a warning to area residents regarding telephone scammers posing as Mercer County Sheriff’s Officers.
Over the past month, the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office has received complaints about callers claiming to be sheriff’s officers, asking residents for personal bank account information or cash payments. The scammers identify themselves as officers for Mercer County and provide fictitious badge numbers. The callers say they have an arrest warrant related to money laundering charges and need access to the resident’s bank accounts. The scammers also suggest meeting at a location and tell the resident to bring cash for bail or fines or face arrest.

Here is a disappointing statistic. Mercer County now ranks sixth in the state of West Virginia for the number of people who are arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. So far in 2020, there have been 115 people arrested for driving under the influence by the Mercer County Sheriffâs Office.
We know itâs been a difficult year for all of us, but that is certainly no excuse for getting behind the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Why are people still making such a foolish mistake, particularly during a year when weâve had so many other things to worry about?
