Movies – and much more – will be coming back to this Cumberland County community now that renovations have begun at the historic West Shore Theatre. The Friends of the West Shore Theatre group announced Wednesday they have now received in grants and donations roughly $1.6 million of the $2 million required to complete renovations of the theater, located at 317 Bridge Street, New Cumberland.

Upper Darby lands $1 million grant for community center

(Courtesy of Upper Darby Township) Upper Darby has received a $1 million grant from the state’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program to fund the first phase of a new community center to serve the state’s sixth-largest municipality. “We’re just really excited that we got the awards  … This might be one of the first projects that’s purely of this administration, which is really exciting,” Mayor Barbarann Keffer said. The grant will go toward the feasibility phase of the project, during which the township will work on planning for and design of the prospective new center, as well as gauging community interest and evaluating costs. When construction is eventually completed, the facility will replace an older multipurpose building at 7000 Walnut St. Local officials hope that it will bring revitalization to the area.

Harry Funk The municipality applied for the grant, administered by the Pennsylvania Office of the Budget, to be used toward major renovations to athletic fields at the Bethel Park Community Center. According to information provided to the state, the baseball field will be removed, and construction includes installing turf on the existing football field, along with a new splash pad, playground, grandstands and bathroom.

Ryan photo) Facebook Share The Historical Society of Perry County was awarded a $500,000 grant of state money last week to go toward ongoing renovations and preservation of the Clarks Ferry Tavern in Duncannon. “We’re tremendously grateful because this is a shot in the arm,” Glenn Holliman, president of the historical society, said about the grant’s help in renovating the historic tavern.
