County public safety committee approves funding for Community Justice Center

The Tompkins County Public Safety Committee approved funding $144,380 for the Community Justice Center on April 15, a major part of the Reimagining Public Safety proposal that was approved last month. The money will fund the county’s portion of the joint city-county venture, bringing it that much closer to reality. Expressed in prior meetings throughout the Reimagining process, the Community Justice Center will work with the city and county to implement the plans approved by the two legislative bodies. County Administrator Jason Molino said employees with the Community Justice Center will be county employees who have a contract with the city. Though he did not specify the number of employees, in past meetings it was suggested that there would be two. The original idea was to have them work out of the county’s mental health building on East Green Street in Ithaca. However, legislator Shawna Black said she was worried about that making people uncomfortable.

Austin mayor addresses Williamson County homeless hotel, crime and public safety

. It s all part of the City s Reimagining Public Safety Initiative. So how is this going to help? Adler: Well, what we did last week was to not change any functions, to not change any people, but to take certain departments and put them under civilian control. So the finance department and the police department is now part of the overall City finance department. As with all other departments, the building services division is now in charge of facilities, as in all other departments, and 9-1-1, 3-1-1, these important emergency call services are now under, again, common operational control. We think it s going to make the city more efficient. It s going to help taxpayers and we think it s going to ultimately improve both the operations and the safety in the city.

Pullman Citizen Police Academy set for fall

Community members interested in getting a behind-the-scenes look into the Pullman Police Department can soon sign up for a 10-week Citizen Police Academy. The Pullman Police Advisory Committee is working with Pullman PD to plan 10 sessions that will run 2.5 hours each. Department staff will lead the presentations, ranging in topics from code enforcement to public records, said committee chair Stephanie Rink. “We’re going to try to touch on as many aspects of the Pullman Police Department and law enforcement as we can,” Pullman PD Chief Gary Jenkins said. For example, patrol officers will talk about a typical day in their job. Jenkins said staff will also speak about criminal procedures, use of force and investigative processes.

Unanimous: Ithaca Common Council passes Reimagining Public Safety resolution, will create new Department of Public Safety

ITHACA, NY Ithaca’s Common Council officially passed the Reimagining Public Safety resolution that includes creating a new department that would comprise armed and unarmed workers. There were a handful of language tweaks from the initial resolution, but the recommendation to create a new department was the one that gathered the most discussion. Alderperson Donna Fleming proposed an amendment to the language nixed the language that said “create a department” because she said that implied an elimination of the current department. She was supported by Alderperson Cynthia Brock who agreed that it would make more sense to change the language to say create a task force to evaluate building a new department.
