Minnesotans are known for their appreciation of the outdoors and a popular way to immerse oneself in nature is by utilizing one of the many trail systems throughout the state. From mountain biking to snowmobiling to hiking and much more, northeast Minn. is home to many of these trails.  The Mesabi Trail winds through 28 communities over almost 130 miles of paved paths. The trail begins at the Mississippi River in Grand Rapids and travels all the way to the Boundary Waters in Ely. Travelers are able to enjoy views of lakes, ponds, creeks, open iron ore mine pits and forests. Construction began in 1996 and the trail will be fully built in the next five years to include 155 miles and become one of the longest paved trails in the country. With a home in Winston-Salem and another in California, 11-year-old Mychal-Bella Bowman has the best of two worlds. “In California, I have my friends, and in North Carolina, I have my family,” Mychal-Bella said. And life is about to get even sweeter for the young actress. “The Underground Railroad,” an Amazon Prime Video series will premiere May 14 on the streaming service. Mychal-Bella plays Grace, a lead role, in this drama that is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Colson Whitehead. The series chronicles Cora Randall’s desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South. It is set in an alternate version of the 19th century in which the Underground Railroad is a literal underground train system used to transport escaped slaves to freedom up north. It was filmed in Savannah, Ga.

In the last decade, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have made a quiet and dramatic change: Officers are making far fewer arrests and writing far fewer citations. In 2009, in Rodney Monroe’s second year as chief, CMPD made 32,081 arrests, according to records provided to WFAE. That number has ticked downward each year, reaching 16,401 people in 2018. After increasing slightly in 2019, the number of arrests plummeted again in 2020 during the pandemic, to 14,535. And for the first quarter of 2021, arrests were down nearly 30% compared to the same period a year ago.
