Regarding “Trump’s impeachment shouldn’t be a priority” (Letters, Jan. 22): I read with some disbelief that one of your contributors believes that the way forward to national healing will come from dropping the impeachment trial of the former occupant of the White House.
For five very long years, that person lied about everything, including our current plague, preaching nothing but disunity as he attacked liberals, Democrats, immigrants, science, non-white and gay people and nearly everyone else, while supporting white supremacists and far-right political issues, and stoking nonsensical paranoia about The Left, guns and phony religious freedom. Car engines routinely have compression ratios (CR) of 10:1 or higher and run fine on mogas. In significant part, it’s because of far-better engine management systems (EMS) which are totally lacking on traditional aircraft engines. But fundamentally, it’s possible only because their small cylinder volume automatically makes pre-ignition much less of a concern. Upgrading from 1928 ignition systems to EMS is technically quite easy and relatively inexpensive, but FAA certification is a byzantine and expensive proposition. Reducing CR with shorter connecting rods is also relatively easy. Turbo engines already have mechanically-lower CR and could be “fixed” by limiting boost. Reducing the effective CR reduces power of course. Expensive true.

What was it like? Did you ever talk with the male engineers in those early years?
Yes, I often did after getting an assignment. Once, an engineer asked me to complete his work by writing a computer program. It was an interesting assignment. When I finished, he said my program gave incorrect answers. I reviewed and ran it again. He laughed and said, âThatâs still not right.â
I didnât like the laugh. My work wasnât wrong. I looked at the work he had done prior to giving me the assignment and found one sign error. When I corrected his mistake and ran the code again, the numbers looked good.
