Shannon Tourism Masterplan Launching Tomorrow 1st March 2021 Tomorrow morning, Tuesday 2 March, will see the launch of the Shannon Tourism Masterplan by Heritage Minister Darragh O Brien and Tourism Minister Catherine Martin as its implementation has already begun. As previously reported on Afloat.ie, the Shannon Tourism Masterplan sets out a bold and integrated framework for sustainable tourism development along the Shannon and Shannon-Erne Waterway, repositioning the region as a key tourism destination within Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands with world-class visitor experiences based on the region’s natural and cultural assets. Photograph by Eamon Ward Plans submitted for Holy Island visitor centre February 23, 2021 THE eagerly-anticipated project to create a visitor centre in Mountshannon as part of the Inis Cealtra Visitor Experience has reached a major milestone, with plans unveiled to renovate an iconic local building. The project, which is being led by the Tourism Department unit of the local authority, is tipped to be the ‘Jewel of Lough Derg,’ and has long been regarded as key to rebalancing tourism between the east and west of the county. Having taken 41 acres on Holy Island into public ownership in 2015, Clare County Council has submitted a Part 8 planning application for The Old Rectory building overlooking Mountshannon Harbour and Lough Derg. The application outlines how a mainland visitor centre will be developed to interpret the seventh century monastic site and its surrounds.

Appeal over Granard turbine plan rejected Updated / Tuesday, 16 Feb 2021 12:49 Granard Motte and Bailey An Bord Pleanála has upheld the decision of Longford County Council to refuse planning permission for the proposed development of a 169m single wind turbine within Kiernan Milling Mill Building at Granardkill in Granard. Kiernan Milling, care of Galetech Energy Services of Clondargan, Stradone, Co Cavan, had appealed the 14 July 2020 decision. An Bord Pleanala upheld the local authority s decision and deemed that the proposed turbine development would seriously injure and interfere with the setting of Granard Motte and Bailey and would also be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.
