YOUNGSTOWN The Mass of Ordination and Installation for the Rev. David J. Bonnar as the sixth bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown will take place 2 p.m. today at St. Columba Cathedral.
On Nov. 17, Pope Francis appointed Bonnar of the Diocese of Pittsburgh as the sixth bishop of Youngstown. Bonnar is replacing Bishop George Murry, who died in June after battling leukemia.

The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, with its bans and limitations on in-person gatherings at schools, churches, restaurants and celebrations, served to keep people apart.
In response, the Diocese of Pittsburgh strengthened its efforts to bring them together.

How easily would the new bishop fit in with the 126,000 Catholics in the 78 parishes in Westmoreland, Indiana, Fayette and Armstrong counties? Would he have a sense of humor? Would he like pierogis, pizza and the Terrible Towel?
âI have been fervently praying for the announcement,â he said about Pope Francisâs anticipated appointment.
As vicar general under Bishop Malesic and diocesan administrator after the bishop left, he would be the one receiving the news.
That call came the week before last when he learned that Pope Francis had appointed him as the sixth bishop of the diocese.
