Accuses LDF of stoking Islamophobia, says it will only benefit BJP most
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has made a concerted pitch to counter what its leaders described as “demonisation” of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).
The party reportedly felt the Left Democratic Front s (LDF) bid to stir prejudice against the IUML to polarise voters on religious lines had fallen on receptive ears, especially among the Christian community in central and south Kerala.
The Islamophobic propaganda reflected in the erosion of traditional UDF votes in the local body polls. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had also electorally benefited from the bogey of radical Islam raised by the LDF.

They seek support of the church in the Assembly polls
Congress leader and former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala on Sunday visited the headquarters of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church (MOSC) at Devalokam in Kottayam.
The leaders, who arrived at the Orthodox headquarters by 11 a.m., met Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Paulose II, the head of the MOSC, and held discussions with him.
In an hour-long meeting, the leaders are learnt to have sought the Orthodox sect’s support to the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the upcoming Assembly elections, besides giving an assurance on settling the church dispute amicably. Both parties, however, did not comment on what exactly transpired in the discussions.

Prime Minister Modiâs meeting with Catholic bishops from Kerala is viewed as BJPâs efforts to seek support from the Christian community ahead of the assembly elections.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday (19 January) met three Catholic bishops as part of what could be construed as the Bharatiya Janata Party s (BJPâs) efforts to reach out to the Christian community ahead of the assembly elections in Kerala.
Modi met Cardinal Oswald Gracias of the Latin-rite Church, Mumbai, Cardinal George Alencherry, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, and Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malankara Church â both Kerala â in his office.
Eastern Orthodox Christians and Roman Catholics in India are watching with concern a Supreme Court case about confession. Last week, the Supreme Court of India agreed to consider a petition by three lay members of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, who argue that the requirement of mandatory annual confession in their denomination violates the Constitutionally protected right to privacy.
The lawsuit follows two criminal cases, which started in 2018, where priests of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church in Kerala were accused of abusing confession to solicit female penitents into sexual relationships, and blackmail their husbands by threatening to reveal their wives’ secrets. The criminal cases are pending, with some of the priests in jail, but a parallel canonical investigation of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church concluded that the priests were guilty, and they were defrocked.
