MRCS trains its staff on disaster national response

Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) President, Innocent Majiya, has described the National Response Team (NRT) training which the organization conducted for its staff and other stakeholders, as important saying it will help in punctual disaster management and humanitarian response. Majiya was speaking in Mchinji on Tuesday, during the closing of a seven day National Response Team Training for the Red Cross volunteers staff, and other stakeholders drawn from all the districts. “As per its mandate MRCS continues to be a key partner of the Malawi Government in responding to emergencies. It is from this background that the NRT training drilled the participants with a multi-sectoral approach to handling emergencies.”

Communications Manager, at the charitable institution, Felix Washon has told us in an interview that the Malawi Red Cross Society will ensure that there is an effective response to the third wave of the pandemic if it hits Malawi. `` With help from the Ministry of Health, for example, Malawi Red Cross Society has trained 5,000 volunteers across the country who are providing information on prevention of the virus and also access to covid-19 vaccine currently being administered in the country”, says Washon.

MRCS advises flood victims to relocate

Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) has advised flood victims in Karonga to relocate to upper areas to protect themselves from the effects of floods that occur every year in the district. MRCS District Coordinator for Karonga, Blessings Mlowoka, made the call on Tuesday when the organization distributed relief items to about 647 flood-affected households and those affected by strong winds in senior chiefs Kilupula and Mwakaboko in the district. “Karonga is one of the disaster-prone districts in the country due to its topography, so, there is need for all people that live in flood-prone areas to move to upper land to avoid loss of lives and property each year,” said Mlowoka.

It is administered by the Joint Commission of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross, which maintains close contact with the Japanese Permanent Mission in Geneva, the Japanese Red Cross Society and the Meiji Jingu Research Institute in Japan. The Fund has a total value of over 16 million Swiss francs and supports projects run by National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to benefit their communities in various ways. The first grant was awarded in 1921, to help five European National Societies fight the spread of tuberculosis.
