Parley Passes 24 Votes, Opposition Question Some Allocations When Parliament reconvened Wednesday afternoon, legislators seemed to be on the fast lane passing 24 votes in space of 3 hours. Vote number 278, Unforeseen Expenditures attracted attention with members seeking to find out from Minister of Finance, Felix Mlusu justification for the increase in funding allocation. Govt revises upward 2020/2021 national budget

The government has revised upwards the 2020/21 national budget from K2.2 trillion to K2.3 trillion owing to increased emergency expenditure due to the Covid-19 pandemic and re-administering of the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) among other things. Presenting the mid-year budget statement in Parliament, Minister of Finance Felix Mlusu said the revised budget has a deficit of K810 billion up from the initial K755 billion representing 8.8 percent of gross domestic product. Mlusu said last year the economy grew by 0.9 percent but it will experience a rebound this year to achieve the projected growth of 3.5 percent owing to the anticipated better agriculture outturn due to the Affordable Input Programme (AIP).

2 Netted Over Fake Certificate in Mzuzu

Two men have spent a night within the walls of Mzuzu Police Station after being found in possession of counterfeit Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE). The two who identified themselves as Suddie Juwawo, aged 26, from Pombeya village, T.A. Nsamala, Balaka and Blessings Chikumbutso, aged 25, from Dawuya village, T.A. Kaphuka, in Dedza were arrested during the ongoing Malawi Defense Force (MDF) recruitment at Mzuzu Upper Stadium, where the two suspects presented the certificates. Deputy Spokesperson for Mzuzu Police Inspector Paul Tembo said military personnel with their experience doubted the authenticity and true ownership of the documents. “Military personnel noted something fishy with those certificates. They refered the matter to Mzuzu Police Station where after questioning Suddie Juwawo revealed that the certificate he presented belonged to his late brother who passed in 2015.
