PUTRAJAYA: Expediting the implementation of 5G technology and strengthening cybersecurity technology are among the five main focuses of the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM) this year.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said the other three focuses of KKMM were increasing foreign investment in the digital economy, internationalising Malaysia’s creative industry and transforming Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM).
He said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) would focus on the successful implementation of 5G technology which would complete internet connectivity nationwide and be a catalyst for the development of a more vibrant digital economy.
AS Malaysia embarks on an ambitious digital economy plan that includes a target to produce unicorns start-ups valued at more than US$1 billion (RM4.05 billion) it might be useful to look back and reflect on the story of Grab. Launched as a ride-hailing company, MyTeksi, in Malaysia in 2012, it quickly expanded across Southeast Asia and has since developed into a super app company offering a variety of services that include last-mile delivery.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 4 Executives from some of the country’s biggest start-ups have welcomed Putrajaya’s recently-launched digital economy blueprint but with reservations about its goals and the timeline set to achieve them.
While the 10-year MyDigital plan will put the government on track to spur the high potential sector, they said the initiative appeared convoluted and lacked vigour in terms of what it sets out to achieve.
Last month, at an online event organised by the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC) and the Concordia Forum, I had the privilege of speaking alongside our former minister of foreign affairs, Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar, on our vision for emerging Southeast Asia, specifically the prospects of Malaysia’s foreign policy in the year ahead.
Among the issues explored were the impact of Covid-19 on trade and foreign policy, US-China relations and whether or not things would change under the new US President Joe Biden. What was clear by the end of the discussion was that Malaysia needs to renew its role in the region to provide greater leadership. However, given its current preoccupation with domestic politics, this may prove exceedingly challenging.
