Malaysia’s EPF ends 2020 up 7.9% at almost $250 billion Bloomberg Malaysia s Employees Provident Fund posted record gross investment gains in 2020, lifting the value of its portfolio to 1 trillion ringgit ($247.5 billion) as of Dec. 31. The Kuala Lumpur-based EPF made those advances despite granting participants early access to their retirement savings to help them survive the economic devastation of the coronavirus crisis. A Feb. 27 announcement by the national defined contribution system said it had credited a 5.2% dividend payout to the accounts of its 13.8 million conventional plan participants, down from 5.45% the year before. It was the lowest level since the 4.5% pay out for 2008, the year of the global financial crisis.

Malaysia’s Employees Provident Fund (EPF) assets hit 1 trillion ringgit (US$246.55 billion) for the first time in early December as the country’s largest pension fund earned record gross investment income last year, driven by equities. EPF Chairman Ahmad Badri said the rollout of vaccines for Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, will have “important bearings” for the 2021 outlook. The pension fund earned 60.98 billion ringgit of gross investment income in 2020, up 21.26% from 50.29 billion ringgit in 2019. Ahmad Badri said over the weekend that investment assets hit the one trillion ringgit mark on December 3 but dropped to 998 billion ringgit as of end-2020, 7.9% higher than the end-2019 level.
