Democrats buoyed by a wave of anti-Trump political activism are not only trying to wrest control of some legislatures from Republicans in the 2018 election, they re also striving to tighten their hold in states where they already have an edge, or where control is split, to pass legislation ranging from gun control, to taxation to health care. In Colorado and New York, Democrats hope to win one more seat in each state senate to gain control of both legislatures. (AP Photo/David Zalubowski, File)
The local Valley Health Alliance is a valuable player in bringing open market health insurance costs down in the Roaring Fork Valley and Garfield County.
But a second, member-based alliance that county commissioners have been wooing for the past two years could punch those costs down even further.
That was the pitch from Claire Brockbank, CEO of Summit County-based Peak Health Alliance, during an online community forum hosted by the Garfield County commissioners Monday evening.
Garfield County has been working with Peak to potentially bring its negotiated-pricing approach to the county, working with health care providers and insurers on an agreed fee schedule and insurance rates.

More than 1,500 COVID-19 second-dose vaccine appointments scheduled for Friday in Garfield County have been canceled and will be rescheduled, due to shipment delays caused by winter storms across the country.
The delay means about 1,000 people previously scheduled to receive their second dose booster shot at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, and another 400 at Grand River Health in Rifle, will see their appointments delayed until next week.
Valley View appointments are being rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 24, and Grand River and Mountain Family Health Center appointments are being rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 25.
“Valley View apologizes to those affected by this change, but these are circumstances outside of the organization’s control,” Valley View Hospital Community Relations Officer Stacey Gavrell said in a Thursday morning news release explaining the situation.
