Asheville Addressing Homeless Encampments
(Asheville, NC) The city of Asheville is trying to buckle down on two homeless encampments. WLOS-TV reports residents in Aston Park and Martin Luther King, Junior Park were issued seven-day removal notices last week due to heightened safety issues. Homeward Bound told WLOS-TV it s working to provide temporary housing head of planned construction along the French Broad River, which is affecting homeless encampments there.
Governor Signs Education Initiatives
(Raleigh, NC) The governor is pushing forward a measure that will provide more education for at-risk students affected by the pandemic. Roy Cooper signed a bill Friday that requires school districts to offer summer face-to-face instruction with enrichment activities. House Speaker Tim Moore said he was grateful for the bipartisanship that went into the bill. Another law signed by Cooper allows bonuses for teachers who work in summer reading camps.

Simone Grimes has been appointed chief financial officer of Acadia Insurance in Westbrook. She succeeds Charlie Hamblen, who will retire later this year. Grimes has diverse senior leadership experience in the worlds of finance and insurance, previously working at PricewaterhouseCoopers, then as a regional vice president at a national insurance carrier and most recently serving as the deputy chief operating officer and senior strategy executive at the Federal Housing Finance Agency in Washington, DC.

Catamounts Care Ambassadors part of team recognized as force for beating the pandemic

The Catamounts Care Ambassadors, a student-led and campus supported program to build awareness of pandemic protocols, in collaboration with Student Health Ambassadors from five other higher education institutions have been recognized for innovation in programing to stop the spread of COVID-19 within the region and on respective campuses including Western Carolina University.
The team earned second place from the National Consortium for Building Healthy Academic Communities in a recent competition and will be presented an award and gift cards during a virtual summit April 21-22. The consorti
