ASHLAND The Highlands Museum and Discovery Center will honor a recent loss with an exhibit. Curator Carolyn Warnock died March 10. The museum has been closed for several months because of COVID-19 restriction. One of the last projects Warnock was involved in before the closure was curating an exhibit focusing on women’s suffrage. Heather Whitman, curator and registrar at the museum, said Warnock’s exhibits demonstrated how fashion reflected changes in society. For example, dramatic changed occurred in women’s fashion once women gained the right to vote by the passage of the 19th amendment in 1920. Floor-length dresses, mostly long sleeved, along with full corsets and ornamental hats were the style in 1910. By the 1920s, women were wearing loose-fitting, short, sleeveless dresses with head-hugging — and more practical — cloche hats.

Rewriting Ashland Tragedy: Ashland author pens book after 12 years of research

An Ashland native has written the history behind the Ashland Tragedy after years of dedication and research. Joe Castle wrote “The Ashland Tragedy: Murder, a Mob & a Militia” in Kentucky after 12 years of research and a degree through Morehead State University, which he earned at 65 years old. Through his research he learned about one of the greatest misfortunes in Kentucky history, and why it should be told by the perspective of the Ashland people. “It is a tragic story, but it is also a story about a community of people who came under attack and through their resilience, courage and determination were able to see it through,” said Castle. “I decided that it really needed to be written from the perspective of the Ashland people. It had to come from an Ashland person, which I am as a native son of Ashland.”
