Brandt’s image celebrates the elegance of the mother lion who is statuesque as she feeds her cub. Brandt, who works exclusively in East Africa, has spent nearly 20 years photographing disappearing animal populations using a medium-format camera. Unlike his contemporaries who favor telephoto or zoom lenses, Brandt shoots his subjects from close range, requiring hours of observation and a measure of trust. Nick Brandt (British, b. 1966) studied Film and Painting from the Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in London. His close range, black and white images of African wildlife and landscape have garnered him international recognition and is a celebrated activist.
