Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese sent out a special order to deputies allowing people arrested for misdemeanor crimes, including reckless burning and criminal mischief, to be booked into jail.
Previously, police officers issued a citation for the misdemeanor crimes and ordered the person to appear at a future court date. The change in booking criteria took effect on April 23, according to a memo signed by Reese.
Sheriff’s office spokesperson Chris Liedle explained the changes were in the “interest of public safety” and will have little to no impact on the corrections system.
Struggling businesses in Portland, Oregon are still dealing with vandalism and violence 9 months after protests began. Mike McCarter, president of Move Oregon s Border, weighs in.
Multnomah CountySheriff Mike Reese issued a special order last week allowing deputies to book suspects accused of misdemeanor reckless burning and criminal mischief into the county jail as Portland continues to grapple with violent protests that have seen businesses and government buildings vandalized.
The changes took effect on April 23, according to a memo signed by Reese. The addition of the two specified crimes was done in recognition of the recent proliferation of attempts to set fire to objects and structures during demonstrations, and has been done in the best interest of public safety, sheriff s office spokesman Chris Liedle told Fox News.
The change allows police to book people into jail for misdemeanor crimes instead of issuing a citation.

Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese issued this statement Tuesday afternoon, immediately upon learning of the convictions of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd:
Today, by a jury of his peers, former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all counts for the murder of George Floyd. While the verdict will never bring back George Floyd, it provides a measure of closure to his family, friends and the greater community. The systems of accountability worked, holding an individual, who worked within that very system, responsible for their criminal actions.
