YOUNGSTOWN It’s been a 40 year tradition for the staff and students of Choffin Career and Technical Center to donate winter accessories that are then given to needy Mahoning County children. The mittens, hats, scarves and socks are generally collected inside the school because most of the donations come from staff and students within the school, said Kaylor White, early-childhood education instructor. But because of the COVID-19 pandemic, school officials decided the collection needed to be held outside to reduce the chance of the event leading to spread of the virus. Officials decided this year’s collection would be held in the parking lot of the Wood Street building Monday, which would make it easy for the public to “drive up and drop off,” White said. The event was promoted on the Choffin website and in school emails.
