Loudoun County, Virginia, and Montgomery County, Maryland, are looking to restore ferry service across the Potomac River.
The historic White’s Ferry that once carried hundreds of commuters between the states closed in December following a court decision that said the ferry’s landing site had trespassed on land owned by Rockland Farm.
In a news release, Loudoun County said it will study all options for restoring White’s Ferry, including searching for a new landing site. The county’s Department of Transportation and Capital Infrastructure will work with transportation officials in Montgomery County to try to find short- and long-term possibilities for a ferry service in the area.
Former Minneapolis police officer was convicted of murder Bethesda Beat Staff Report |

After a jury on Tuesday convicted former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin of murdering George Floyd, officials in Montgomery County shared their reactions to the verdict.
From Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich:
It is a sad reality that Black Americans continue to suffer disproportionate use of force, which far too often leads to fatal consequences. And George Floyd’s case is neither the first example of this, nor the last.
These victims were deprived of justice while they lived and are too often victims even in death. So, it is not surprising that so many of us have been looking to the trial for a sign that the arc is bending toward justice even when the assailant is a police officer.

Montgomery County Council Member Hans Riemer is seeking an independent investigation into how the police department handled the 1986 death of a 19-year-old man in Silver Spring.
Keith Warren was found hanging from a tree in a wooded area near his Silver Spring home. His death was classified as “suicide,” but his family has called the police evidence and investigation into question for years, asking for his death to be reclassified as “unknown.”
Riemer said he spoke with Keith Warren’s sister, Sherri Warren, about the case and felt compelled to request for the independent investigation.
