Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day is an official statewide holiday that celebrates MLK’s life and accomplishments. This day is often associated with acts of service and is celebrated on every third Monday in January.
King lived from 1929-1968 and in this time he progressed and changed society for the better. He is a man of many great accomplishments, most famously for leading the fight for equality and rights to all people by helping end segregation and pushed for the signing of the Civil Rights Act.
King was most known for fighting for minorities to have equal rights, however a lot of people aren’t aware of his other notable accomplishments. “One of my favorite things about Doctor King is that he not only loved people of color, he was a massive advocate for the Jewish community as well. As we saw two weeks ago in D.C. and as we have seen here in Oregon, we are in a time of increased political violence. A faction of this country is using violence and intimidation to try and overturn a valid election and harm their opponents. These are the same tactics that the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and thousands of others marched against, and that ultimately cost him his life.
18 JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas, (Jan. 20, 2021) Brooke Army Medical Center honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during a live virtual presentation on BAMC’s Facebook page Jan. 14.
The Baptist minister and activist became the spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. He is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.
The national recurring theme of Martin Luther King Jr. Day is “Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not A Day Off!” It calls upon the American people to engage in public service and promote peaceful social change.
“Our world has dramatically changed since we were together last January. Since that time, we were forced to come face-to-face with our nation’s racist reality,” Bernice King, daughter of King and Coretta Scott King and CEO of The King Center in Atlanta, said at the service.
“As we commemorate the King holiday, I can hear his voice still reverberating through the annals of time that this may be our last chance to make the shift away from being power-centered to becoming more people-centered and from being utterly self-centered to becoming more other-centered,” Ms. King said. “I can hear him reminding us of the necessity of shifting from a reign of chaos toward a more just, humane, equitable, peaceful and sustainable world, which for him was the beloved community.”
