MACC, ODC Network will consolidate Lake Macatawa watershed management

HOLLAND Environmental programs in the Lake Macatawa Watershed will be managed by a single group after two collaborating organizations will consolidate efforts to oversee water cleanup in the area The Outdoor Discovery Center Network will oversee watershed management beginning this fall. Previously, ODC Network and the Macatawa Area Coordinating Council collaborated on many environmental projects involving the watershed.  During the MACC s policy meeting Monday, June 7, members voted to enter an agreement with the ODC Network for Watershed Management. This means ODC Network will take control of projects addressing water clarity in Lake Macatawa, dealing with sediment and runoff that can pollute the lake and oversee other issues.

SOM 18 watershed organizations awarded EGLE conservation, education grants FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Robert Sweet, Nonpoint Source Grants Coordinator, SweetR@Michigan.gov, 517-612-9765 The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) today announced 18 grants totaling $600,000 for projects that will support watershed organizations with conservation and educational efforts. The Watershed Council Support grants are funded under Michigan s Public Act 166 of 2020.  Grants were limited to $40,000 per applicant and the projects must be put into action within a year of receiving the grants. Among the projects funded: Environmental outreach to targeted audiences including underserved communities and non-English speaking households; monitoring to detect and control aquatic invasive species and support boat cleaning stations; support watershed management planning; support farm-based conservation planning; and coordinate water quality monitoring among local units of go

City government is afraid to utter the words “climate change.” Their Strategic Development Team, which is studying short-term updates to the Community Energy Plan, is hesitant to even acknowledge climate change as a reason for their work. Why? Say the words. Address the reality of the latest science. You may have noticed yard signs popping up across the area which state “I’m A Holland Climate Voter.” If you think this issue is important, you may want to request a yard sign at hollandclimatecollaborative.com. But, what about the city’s long-range plan to reduce CO2 emissions? When the Macatawa Area Coordinating Council begins each three-year planning process, they first establish their 25 year-long range plan. City council left out this critical step when they gave the SDT their marching orders in August 2020.
