Beca sustainability expert Eleanor Grant said renewable gas was “a very real solution to decarbonising New Zealand that could realistically be having an impact by 2030”. Based on current natural gas prices, about 10 per cent of the biogas the report contemplated using could be supplied economically today, she said. “A further 30 to 40 per cent would become available in coming decades as natural gas prices increase.” But the economics would need to shift for “hard to use” sources such as manure and crop residues to become commercial, she said. Methane is the main component of both natural gas and biogas.
