Congratulations to the Carthage Board of Commissioners on the approval of the Magnolia Hill project.
Given the stated range of rent and the median household income, Iâm curious about the difference in thought process for the Board of Commissioners and those whose yard signs say they love Carthage in the approval of this project versus the rejection of the assisted income apartment project, proposed in July last year.
Given the need for affordable housing to retain teachers and others in public service of all our residents, I am eager to hear how the commissioners will address affordable housing in the land-use plan update, currently underway, especially given the apparent shift in voting bloc away from the historic and business districts and rural areas toward density centered around N.C. 22.

The Carthage Board of Commissioners cleared the way Tuesday for a development that will house apartments, self-storage buildings and retail space near N.C. 22 and McCaskill Road.
Following a public hearing, the commissioners voted unanimously to approve a conditional zoning amendment requested in December by developer Jim OâMalley. The project, referred to as Magnolia Hill in planning documents, is similar to Tylerâs Ridge, another development OâMalley spearheaded on N.C. 22.
Magnolia Hill will create 216 apartments across nine buildings. The complex is expected to feature a mix of single-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom units.
Tenants will have access to a swimming pool, dog park and all the âsame amenitiesâ available at Tylerâs Ridge, according to OâMalley. He said the development will include additional amenities like pickle ball courts and a clubhouse where residents can buy beer, soda and pizza.Â
