Janey became the acting mayor because she was serving as president of the Boston City Council at the time of Marty Walsh s departure, as prescribed in the Boston city charter. Section 11B reads in part, whenever there is a vacancy in the office of mayor from any cause, the president of the city council, while such absence, inability or vacancy continues, shall perform the duties of mayor.”

On the same day Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins convened a summit to look at crafting a “systemic response” to the Hinton drug lab scandal that rocked Massachusetts nearly a decade ago, Boston’s lead prosecutor announced Thursday she’s seeking to vacate another 100-plus convictions tied to the misconduct of two former state chemists.
Rollins’ Integrity Review Bureau on Thursday asked a Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court justice to vacate all remaining “List Three” convictions, cases prosecutors didn’t try to vacate following a historic 2017 ruling from the court.

High Court Rules Brookline Firefighter Was Wrongfully Fired After Reporting Racist Work Environment

BROOKLINE (CBS) – This week, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court said Gerald Alston was wrongfully fired after complaining of a racist work environment at the Brookline Fire Department.
“The truth is the truth and I knew it was going to come to the surface and right now it vindicates me, it fills me with joy,” Alston said.
Vindication, but not justice. The former Brookline firefighter said he’s relieved his truth has been validated by the state’s highest court.
“I was relying on my union to step up and help and they didn’t do so either. I feel as though like there has to be something in place for the little people,” Alston said.
