The reason? Refusing to administer the state s scheduled standardized test.
On Monday, McCarthy walked into school with a group of 25 other people who support her position as a conscientious objector to the state-mandated administration of the state s standardized test, Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System, or MCAS.
McCarthy said she is willing to be disciplined, including an unpaid suspension, to protest the continued administration of the standardized tests. But both this Monday and on May 21, she was given one day of paid administrative leave for expressing her views.
McCarthy said she told Hull school administrators she would refuse to administer the tests this year in a letter she sent two weeks prior.

A formula the state uses to determine how much money public schools should receive in aid next year leaves Haverhill shortchanged by more than $2 million.
The Haverhill School Committee agreed last week to ask Gov. Charlie Baker to adjust the formula after member Richard J. Rosa noted it is based on the number of students enrolled the previous year. He explained that measurement is flawed because it is artificially low due to the coronavirus.
“Essentially what’s happening is we’re going to be asked at some point the School Committee to pass a budget that we know isn’t going to be enough to account for the couple hundred or more students that are going to come back into the district in September,” he explained.

Some Massachusetts Students Will Need to Switch Teachers Mid-Year
The day before the one-year anniversary of Governor Charlie Baker s declaration of a State of Emergency due to COVID-19, Education Commissioner Jeffrey Riley made the call to mandate the process of reopening the schools for full-time, in-person learning. This has been the goal from the beginning. We know that the greatest thing to do is to have our children and our teachers together, said Dr. Robert Baldwin, President of the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents and Fairhaven Superintendent of Schools.

The deadline for elementary schools (K-5) to reopen to full-time, in-person learning is April 5, 2021. The commissioner also announced the deadline for a return to middle school will be Wednesday, April 28, 2021.
