Veolia North America water facilities in Gardner, Ashburnham-Winchendon honored

Staff report The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has announced the recipients of the annual Public Water Systems Award, which recognizes exceptional performance among many public water supply systems. Among those honored are Veolia North America, which operates and maintains the Gardner and Ashburnham-Winchendon (contracted for 20 years) water facilities where they treat and distribute public drinking water. Each year, MassDEP honors the state’s many dedicated drinking water professionals, while acknowledging noteworthy accomplishments that involve excellent water service to the public. “The Baker-Polito administration is proud to recognize drinking water providers across the commonwealth who share the administration’s commitment to ensuring that residents have access to safe, clean and healthy drinking water,” said Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Kathleen Theoharides.

In Massachusetts, the study will focus on Hyannis and Ayer two communities where public drinking water supplies were contaminated by firefighting foams used at nearby fire training areas. Barnstable town manager Mark Ells, speaking at a webinar to announce the study, noted that Hyannis has PFAS-free drinking water after the town spent millions of dollars to install a filtration system. But, he added, ”the concern regarding these emerging contaminants is ever-present.”

The town of Wayland has been handing out cases of bottled water since it first found certain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in two of three wells at the Happy Hollow wellfield in February. In their most recent update, town officials said they plan to shut down one well, treat the second well showing elevated levels and blend the treated water with water from the third well.
