Initiative seeks to tackle food waste
In response to the environmental and financial costs of exporting food waste off-Island, the Food Waste Initiative is advocating for investment in local composting infrastructure. In a virtual chat hosted early Thursday evening, project director Eunice Youmans explained the need for local food-waste processes and the potential benefits behind large-scale composting.
According to Youmans, food waste presents both an environmental and economic issue for the Island. A significant contributor of climate change, food waste emits 8% of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions per year.
The Food Waste Initiative reports that Martha’s Vineyard exports 6,500 tons of food waste off-Island each year, accumulating in 621 trucks displacing 2,500 cars on the ferry. More significantly, they project that, between 2025 and 2040, food waste will cost Vineyarders $19.4 million total.
OPINION: Protect Wareham’s and Onset’s drinking water
Wicked Local
Greetings fellow citizens. I write to you today to correct some misinformation in an opinion piece in the Wareham Courier regarding the proposed rezoning article to be considered by Wareham voters at a Special Town Meeting this Saturday, April 10, (“Opinion: Selectman Teitelbaum says beware of misinformation” April 6).
As a citizen of this Town and Wareham Land Trust president, I attended every Planning Board meeting regarding the proposed rezoning of East Wareham since the meetings began on Nov. 30, 2020 and I have submitted letters expressing our concerns to the Board of Selectmen and the Planning Board. By attending all these Planning Board meetings, I have seen this proposal change from acreage that was roughly one quarter of the town (from Charge Pond Road and Route 25 north and east to Plymouth) to 963 acres and now to 756 acres.

The Mashpee Board of Health during its meeting last Thursday, April 1, conditionally approved the marijuana cultivation permit for Aspen Blue LLC at 14 Wags Road, provided the recommendations the board made are met.
First among the health board s recommendations are that the conditions, recommendations and manufacturer specifications within the Odor Mitigation Plan are incorporated into the board s decision that the noise-attenuating material and sound barriers are provided around the chiller air cooler and generator.
The second is that the $300 operating permit fee is paid. Third, the requirements and proposals depicted on the submitted site plan be completed before cultivation permit issuance, as an example water drains and a tight tank. An agent of the health board will confirm the tank, and the specifications and calculations for the air discharge blower and stack will be provided to the board of health to confirm it meets the odor mitigation plan.
