CARB-X to fund development rapid diagnostic test for sepsis
CARB-X announced today that it is awarding up to $3 million to GenomeKey of Bristol, United Kingdom, to develop an innovative rapid diagnostic test for sepsis.
GenomeKey s diagnostic project uses technology that combines innovative methods to separate bacterial DNA from human DNA in whole blood with next-generation DNA sequencing and machine learning to interpret antimicrobial susceptibility. The aim is determine, within 4 hours, what bacteria are causing the infection in sepsis patients and which antibiotics would be most effective. Conventional laboratory tests take 24 to 73 hours to produce results.
Globally, an estimated 11 million people die each year from sepsis, which occurs when the immune system has an overwhelming reaction to an infection that has entered the bloodstream. Quick, appropriate treatment is considered vital.

Massachusetts will reopen some outdoor Phase 4, Step 2 industries effective May 10, 2021, and put plans in place for further reopenings on May 29 and August 1, Governor Charlie Baker has announced. The City of Boston will delay most of these reopenings by three weeks.
In addition, effective April 30, face coverings will be required only outside in public when it is not possible to socially distance and at other times required by sector-specific guidance.

Effective May 10, large venues such as indoor and outdoor stadiums, arenas, and ballparks currently open as part of Phase 4, Step 1 at 12 percent capacity will be permitted to increase capacity to 25 percent.

BOSTON (CBS) The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported 1,392 new confirmed COVID cases and 12 additional deaths in the state on Wednesday.
Health officials said the total number of confirmed cases in the state is now 643,428. The total number of confirmed deaths is now 17,227.
There were 102,432 total new tests reported.
As of Wednesday, the seven-day weighted average of positive tests in Massachusetts is 1.71%.
There are 594 people currently hospitalized for a coronavirus-related illness Wednesday. There are 153 patients currently in intensive care.
There are an estimated 27,321 active cases in Massachusetts.
