Updated: 5:04 PM EDT Apr 5, 2021 The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported an additional 2,912 confirmed COVID-19 cases Monday, bringing the statewide total to 607,967 since the start of the pandemic.State health officials also added 43 confirmed COVID-19-related deaths to the state s total, which is now 16,981. Monday s data report includes previously delayed data after the DPH did not publish a COVID-19 data report on Sunday due to the Broad Institute experiencing reporting issues. So far, a total of 4.62 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been shipped to Massachusetts, of which 85.3% have been administered. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control counts 58 cases of the P.1 COVID-19 variant, which is thought to be more contagious and able to reinfect those who have already defeated the coronavirus, in Massachusetts more than any other state in the country.
This weekend, researchers from MIT s Broad Institute and Harvard released data detailing 54 of the Massachusetts cases of the P.1 variant, which was first identified here in a Barnstable County woman who tested positive for COVID-19 in late February. They found that 43 of the 54 P.1 cases were likely connected to one superspreader event.
