News MassDOT Announces $3 2 Million in Shared Winter Streets & Spaces Program Funding Awards

2/03/2021 Massachusetts Department of Transportation Boston The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing the award of $3,236,762.78 in the third round of funding from the Baker-Polito Administration’s Shared Winter Streets and Spaces program. The program, which was launched on November 10, provides technical and funding assistance to help Massachusetts cities and towns conceive, design, and implement tactical changes to curbs, streets, and parking areas in support of public health, safe mobility, and renewed commerce, with a special focus on the particular challenges of winter.  The awards made today will support 21 projects in 21 municipalities, of which 43% are designated Environmental Justice communities and 76% are considered high-risk for COVID-19 infections.  Additionally, 62% of today’s winners have never received a Shared Streets and Spaces award before.

On Jan. 18, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) started construction operations for the replacement of the Belden G. Bly Drawbridge carrying state Route 107 (Salem Turnpike/Western Avenue) over the Saugus River, north of Boston. The project is being constructed by SPS New England Inc., one of the northeast s top bridge and highway contractors. The fieldwork associated with the $99.3 million project is projected to be completed in March 2026. Following some initial water related utility work, SPS New England will demolish the remaining approach spans and substructure elements associated with the original 109-year-old bridge.

Wicked Local The Massachusetts Department of Transportation issued the following press release  The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing that construction operations will begin on Monday, Jan. 18, 2021 for the replacement of the Belden G. Bly Drawbridge carrying Route 107 (Salem Turnpike/Western Avenue) over the Saugus River.  Following some initial water related utility work, the contractor will demolish the remaining approach spans and substructure elements associated with the original 1912 bridge.  Demolition activities are expected to last until mid-February. The work hours for the demolition activities will be 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The overall project consists of the construction of a new bascule movable bridge.  The new permanent bridge, known as the Belden G. Bly Bridge (formerly Fox Hill Drawbridge), will be located on the same alignment as the original 1912 bridge being demolished and immediately west of the existi
