Route 6 Exit Renumbering Project Gets Underway

Renumbering exits along Route 6 will begin this weekend. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced it will begin renumbering exits between Bourne and Orleans on Sunday, December 13. Work on Route 6 from the Sagamore Bridge out to Orleans will take place during the hours of 8 PM to 5 AM. The project is expected to take approximately two weeks to finish. The renumbering project will convert all exit numbers on highways across the state to a mile-post-based numbering system instead of the current sequential numbering system, as required by the Federal Highway Administration. For Route 6, the new numbers would reflect the distance of an exit from the start of the highway at the Rhode Island border. The new exit signs will feature the mile number nearest to the off ramp.
