Massachusetts delays unemployment tax deadline for business owners, buying time to address COVID-related increases

The Baker administration is giving business owners a brief reprieve in their unemployment taxes, delaying the payment deadline by a month, as state officials look into the massive increases in employer contribution rates.
The Massachusetts Department of Unemployment Assistance notified business owners Thursday night that the deadline to pay employer contributions had been pushed back to June 1, according to a copy of the notice provided to MassLive.
“The administration is further evaluating the solvency rate increase and will provide more information at a later date,” the notice states.
BOSTON A Merrimack, New Hampshire based company that provides liquidation for business furniture and equipment and its owner have pleaded guilty and been ordered to pay $180,000 in restitution for failing to pay employer contributions to the state’s unemployment insurance fund, Attorney General Maura Healey announced today.
James Bucchianeri, age 67, of Derry, New Hampshire, president and owner of Global FF&E (aka Nationwide FF&E), pleaded guilty in Suffolk Superior Court March 31in a virtual hearing to the charge of Non-Payment of Employer Contribution (16 counts). Following the plea, Judge Debra Squires-Lee sentenced Bucchianeri to five years of probation and ordered him to complete 200 hours of community service and pay $180,000 in restitution to the state.

The federal government awarded Salem a sizable grant that officials say will speed up the city’s economic recovery from the overwhelming mess COVID-19 has wreaked on local tourism, restaurant and hospitality industries.
Mayor Kim Driscoll and Congressman Seth Moulton touted on Friday afternoon the $662,922 award from the United States Economic Development Administration. The mayor characterized the monetary support as an important cornerstone in Salem’s current and future recuperation.
“This investment will be key to helping many of our existing small businesses,” said Driscoll. “It also provides funds to assist us in strategies to continue growing the diversity of our local economy.”
